]]>But there’s one question that we get asked a lot; ‘Who are Vixen Optics and why can’t I find any information about the riflescopes on the Vixen website?’
The answer is pretty simple really. This exceptional Japanese optical manufacturer has been wowing astronomers and bird and animal watchers with their quality telescopes, spotting scopes and binoculars since 1949. Vixen’s primary customer base was originally in Japan and they continue to have a very strong Japanese following for their star gazing and animal watching equipment. As recreational hunting and shooting isn’t common place in Japan and indeed the majority of customers there are animal lovers, when the brand launched their riflescope range, they were very conscious that they did not want to upset their customer base in the region by showcasing the riflescopes on their site and decided to leave it to retailers such as ourselves in other parts of the world to provide information about them.
We understand that this can be quite confusing for Aussie customers who see Vixen riflescopes for sale in Australia and want to check their legitimacy by finding out more about them on the brands website, and we do hope that this explanation give peace of mind to those considering purchasing one of the scopes from the Vixen line.
Now that we’ve had a brief look at the history of Vixen riflescopes, let’s take a look at the different lines and models available.
There’s three classes of Vixen scopes to choose from, but the main thing that makes Vixen scopes stand out is that all of their products, regardless of their price tag, are 100% made in Japan. This is very unusual for an optical brand and something that really makes Vixen Optics shine. As you move up through the ranges, you’ll see an increase in glass quality and tube size, and a range of different magnification and lens size configurations. All of the scopes come with a lifetime manufacturers warranty against defects.
Now you’ve learnt a bit about the history of Vixen scopes and had a chance to compare what’s offered by each line, it’s time to take a closer look at each model, and bag yourself a new Vixen scope to atop your rifle.

Let’s take a look in more detail at one of the key new features - Kowa’s proprietary KR coating. This high quality coating is applied to the eyepiece and objective lenses of the binoculars to create a dirt resistant layer, making them easy to keep clean even when out in the bush.
The new green finish of the SV II line helps you to blend in to your natural environment, and the stylish new design is ergonomic and extremely easy to hold.
Designed to offer a wider field of view than their predecessor, the second generation Kowa SV binoculars allow you to see more of the landscape at one time and fully immerse in your environment
In addition to the new features of your Kowa SV II binoculars, they’re also packed with a heap of other features that make them a great choice for all of your outdoor observational adventures.
Now you’ve had time to consider the new features of the Kowa SV II, it’s time to get your hands on yours!
We’re thrilled to announce the arrival of the brand new Kowa BD II binoculars to our range.
These awesome, newly designed binoculars from the Japanese optical leader, Kowa, are a must have for outdoor enthusiasts who demand to get a bright, clear and up close view of their surroundings.
Packed with all of the features that their predecessor, the standard BD range were known for, plus new improvements for the 2020 market, these awesome binoculars are available in 32 and 42mm lenses with magnification options including 8x and 10x.
The main improvement for the new BD II range is the wider field of view that they offer. This means that you can see a more of the landscape around you at one time than you could with the equivalent standard BD model. A wider field of view is helpful in locating your subject more quickly as you can scan the landscape more easily.
Most models are slightly lighter than their predecessor meaning you’ll have less weight to carry around with you when you’re nature watching, hunting and more.
Some models have a shorter minimum focus distance meaning you’ll be able to use your new BD 2’s to view bugs, flowers and much more at a closer distance.

We’re stoked to bring you a heap of Athlon optics for your outdoor hobbies and interests across Australia. But the burning question is, who are Athlon, what do they have on offer and what are the main differences between their various product ranges?
Established in 2014, the Athlon brand of sports optics is a relatively new player in the optics world, but it’s already causing a storm with hunters, nature watchers, target shooters and birders world wide. They’ve quickly developed a reputation of high quality, precision optics that are built to perform exceptionally and withstand the rigours of the field.
Headquartered in the USA, Athlon offers a range of binoculars, spotting scopes, riflescopes and more to suit any activity and budget, with products being manufactured in either Japan or China depending on their price point.
Athlon offer six ranges of binoculars each of which are available in a range of different size and magnification options. Their riflescopes can be categorised into ten different ranges, and spotting scopes are available in two different ranges.
Below, we’ll take an in-depth look at what’s offered by Athlon’s flagship Cronus range, and then compare their other ranges to that so you can clearly see what sets their flagship range apart from their other products, and what you’re getting for your money.
The best of the best, the Cronus range of optics is the top of the Athlon Optics product line and is packed with features. Designed for serious users, the flagship Cronus range offers exceptional edge to edge clarity, sharp detail enhancement, ultra-clear brightness and true colour representation. Ideal for hunters, nature watchers, birders and target shooters who won’t settle for anything but the best, the range of products in the Cronus collection is quite slim but expertly designed.
Key features for all optics:
Packed with features, Athlon Ares optics follow closely behind those in the Cronus range in terms of quality. To make these optics more affordable, Athlon have simply omitted some of their very high end features. Other than that, the features they offer are pretty much the same as the Cronus range, and a broader range of configurations are available.
Ares binoculars are available in a wider range of configurations than Cronus binoculars; including a 36mm lens model, and also have a wider field of view. They employ an open bridge design which reduces their weight and makes it easier to maintain your grip. Unlike the Cronus range, they don’t have the field flattening E2ES system.
Ares BTR riflescopes are available exclusively in an illuminated first focal plane reticle, with a large 50mm objective lens. There aren’t as many options to choose from in the Ares range, but you can be safe in the knowledge that they’re packed with all the same features as the higher end Cronus range.
With three objective lens size options available in the Ares range of spotters, there’s sure to be something that suits your activity. This range features an ultra compact 50mm spotter which is significantly lighter than its 50mm Cronus counterpart. These awesome scopes are packed with all of the same features as the Cronus range, but don’t have dual focus abilities.
Athlon Midas optics set the gold standard for their class. Setting a rugged benchmark for all-weather brightness and clarity, they have many of the features of both Cronus and Ares models, including ED glass and argon purging.
Midas binoculars are light and slim thanks to a magnesium chassis. Their closed bridge design makes them slightly heavier than Ares models and they don’t have the field flattening E2ES system.
Midas BTR scopes are designed with tactical precision in mind and are accurate, tough, durable and extremely versatile. Similar to Cronus and Ares scopes, Midas BTR scopes have HD glass which produces images with utmost contrast. Unlike Athlon’s higher end scopes, Midas BTR’s have a second focal reticle system.
As part of Athlon's mid range options, Argos optics still offer a very high level of components and features, and are great performers. They have a fantastic price point which is more accessible to many outdoor enthusiasts who have a tighter budget.
This awesome range of binoculars is similar in many ways to Athlon’s higher end models, however, like the Ares models, they aren’t built with the field flattening E2ES system seen in Cronus models. In addition, they have a more economical polymer composite chassis which not only saves you money, but also takes the weight off your neck and still stands up to the demands of hunting and other outdoor activities.
Available with a variety of different lens sizes and magnification ranges, Argos binoculars are a great option if you're looking for all-weather brightness and clarity at a great price.
If you’re looking for your first riflescope then take a close look at the Argos family. These scopes have features normally only found on high-end scopes and are versatile enough to be a great option for multiple shooting disciplines. They’re available in a range of different specifications with either standard second focal place or illuminated first focal plane reticles (BTR range only)
Argos riflescopes include all the awesome lens and prism coatings you’d expect from Athlon scopes but don’t have high precision erector power settings or the precision zero stop system seen on the more costly models.
The ideal range for outdoor enthusiasts, hunters and birders who need optics but don’t want to spend the earth, Athlon keep things simple with their Talos range by including everything you need for rugged, effective, outdoor use, without including high end features that only fanatical users really appreciate.
Built with a polymer composite chassis which saves weight and money, Talos binoculars are waterproof, have phase corrected prisms and advanced fully multicoated lens. They leave additional coatings to the big players in more expensive ranges and do a fantastic job of offering value and performance at a great price.
Talos riflescopes are available in a standard and BTR configuration which offer a 1inch or 30mm tube. Nitrogen rather than Argon purging is used to waterproof riflescopes in the Talos range, with all models employing fully multicoated lenses for bright, clear images. Standard Talos models have second focal plane reticles only, whereas the BTR models also have a first focal plane reticle option. Like higher end scopes, parallax can be adjusted with side focus, however they keep things more affordable by leaving out a number of their coatings.
Neos optics are perfect for beginners who want quality equipment that performs under pressure and doesn’t leave a hole in their pocket.
Unlike many entry level binoculars, Athlon don’t scrimp on the essentials of waterproofing and multicoating of lenses.
Neos scopes keep things simple and affordable and are available in a range of specifications and reticles. Nailing all of the important stuff, like a nitrogen purged, waterproof body, fully multicoated optics and a second focal plane reticle, these basic scopes are ideal for beginners or those who want a simple scope for their rifle.
We’re sure you’ll agree that Athlon really do have an optic for everyone, every activity and every budget. Now it’s down to you to decide which range will suit your needs and fit your budget.

If you're looking for a new spotting scope for nature watching, hunting, bird watching or general observations, then you really need to give our range of Kowa spotting scopes some serious consideration. Manufactured in Japan with the finest materials, Kowa puts great thought in to their range of scopes, providing offerings designed to suit the differing price brackets of its customers.
We introduced you to the Kowa brand and spoke about their awesome range of binoculars back in late 2016, and now it's time to take a closer look at their spotting scope offerings. In our article below, we'll give you information about the key differences between each product line, and summarise expert reviews from well respected world wide optical experts so you know exactly what to expect from your new Kowa spotter.
Kowa's Prominar TSN-880 spotting scope models are built with pure fluorite crystal to achieve optical characteristics unattainable with glass. They represent the gold standard of scopes for the most serious of users and are packed with high end features to boost performance and make for easy and comfortable viewing.
In his review of the Kowa TSN 883 spotting scope, Jason, the highly regarded owner and author of Bestbinocularreviews.com said:
Strong Points: Where to start! The body of the scope is excellent, made to a very high standard and is compact as well as very light for a scope with such a large objective lens. The glass used in the optics is as good as it gets, as are their coatings, which in turn produce one of the best quality images you can get.
Weak points? To be honest, there really are not any bad points, I just wish you could get all these excellent features at a cheaper price! But as they say - you get what you pay for and in the case of this spotting scope you are getting the very best.
You can read his full review here.
Also part of Kowa's flagship Prominar line of spotting scope models, scopes in the 770 range incorporate almost all of the same features as the 880 line, but are built with XD lenses rather than fluorite crystal. XD (eXtra-low-Dispersion-lens) lenses offer outstanding optical performance, close to that of fluorite models, however as these lenses are easier to manufacture and work with, they come with a more affordable price tag. Spotting scopes from the 770 range continually impress experienced users and beginners alike.
Kowa has put great thought in to designing a scope suitable for the differing price brackets of its customers. Not everyone can afford the gold class features offered by the 880 range, but scopes in the 660 range are much more attainable for many birders and hunters and still incorporate XD glass and many of the other features showcased in Kowa's flagship line.
Available exclusively in an angled design, this awesome spotting scope from Kowa offers a large 82mm lens which has fantastic light gathering power and bright field of view. Popular with birders, hunters and target shooters who want a Japanese made scope, but don't have the budget for a scope from Kowa's 880 series, these sophisticated scopes don't fail to impress.
Kowa 600 series scopes boast an unprecedented lightweight design, making them ultra portable and ideal for out in the field.
Built with a 60mm standard Kowa lens that is fully multicoated, scopes from this series are ideal for a range of applications are Kowa's most affordable spotter offering.
The key thing that we'd really like you to take away from reading this article, is that all Kowa spotting scopes, regardless of their price range, are manufactured in Japan.
If you want the best of the best, then opt for one of Kowa's Prominar spotting scopes. If you want fluorite crystal lenses, then look no further than the TSN-880 Prominar range. If you're budget doesn't stretch that far, then take a look at the scopes built with Kowa's XD lenses, namely those in the 770 and 660 series. Still want exceptional quality, Japanese made glass, but don't have the spare cash for the higher end scopes? Then something from the 600 range, or the 82SV should put a smile on your face.

]]>If your a keen outdoor enthusiast who loves enjoying all things nature related, then your children probably are too. Kids learn by copying others, and if you’re a parent who frequently spends time bird and nature watching, then it’s likely that you children have at least occasionally showed an interest and wanted to join in too.
Knowing that your children are on the road to sharing your passion is exciting and rewarding and their interest should be supported and nurtured as they grow up. Encouraging them to join in with your hobbies is a great idea, but if those hobbies include using specialist, often expensive equipment, then you may want to think twice before letting them loose with your favourite binoculars or spotting scope, and buy them their very own optics to learn with.
For children with a passion for animals, nature and the world around them, a pair of binoculars makes an excellent present for any occasion. Whether you yourself are a keen birder or nature observer, or whether your child has developed an interest all of their own, having their very own binoculars will make all the difference in further developing their interest.
If you want them to make the most of their present, then it’s vital to choose binoculars that are fit for purpose, easy and comfortable for them to use, and are in the right price bracket for you, to ensure that they are of a good quality but haven’t cost you the earth. Your child should understand the value of their binoculars and how to care for them, but not be too scared to use them because they cost too much money.
The following guide takes all of these important factors into account and recommends the best binoculars for you to give to your kids for their birthday or at Christmas.
We know that life is busy, so we’ll keep things short and sweet. If you want to read about any of the information below in more detail, then hop over to our full buyers guide for children's binoculars to get a deeper understanding.
Opt for binoculars with a magnification on the lower end of the range. We’d suggest those with a 7x or 8x magnification.
Binoculars that produce highly magnified images are much more susceptible to produce blurred images, as even the smallest movement of the hands has a great effect. Blurred images are no fun to look at and your child is likely to loose interest in their binoculars quickly if they can’t keep them still enough to get a good view.
Binoculars with a lower magnification are great for getting the widest view possible, as their field of view is wider. This means that you children will be able to see more of the landscape, sky or animal they are looking at than they would if they were stood in the same location with binoculars with a higher magnification.
Choose binoculars with a wide field of view so your child can see more of the world around them at one time.
We’ve mentioned it already, but try and choose binoculars that have a large field of view. The larger your child's view of the field is, the more of it they will be able to see and the easier they’ll find it to figure out which part of the landscape they are looking it and locate the animal/bird/landmark they were trying to find. A larger field of view is also great for watching fast moving targets such as birds, planes or even the ball at a cricket match.
In general, binoculars with a lower magnification have a wider field of view, but if you’re choosing between two binoculars of the same magnification, always take the time to check out how wide the field of view that they produce is and use this to guide your decision.
Keep an eye on the minimum interpupillary distance shown for the binoculars that you are considering buying and opt for those with the smallest distance. Usually binoculars with a minimum interpupillary distance of around 51mm - 53mm should fit an older child’s face comfortably.
In general, kids have smaller heads and faces than adults. In turn, their eyes are closer together than yours are, meaning that any binoculars that they use have to be adjusted to comfortably fit the size of their face, and the eye cups lined up to ensure that they can actually see through them!
The distance between the eye cups of a set of binoculars is called the interpupillary distance. In many binoculars, the interpupillary distance can be adjusted by moving the barrels of the binoculars closer together or further apart thanks to a central hinge in the binoculars body. Some but not all binoculars will provide you with the maximum and minimum distance that eye cups can move apart, so that you can assess whether you think that this distance will be suitable for yours or your children face.
Binoculars that are especially for children are designed with the size of an average child’s face in mind, but if you decide to opt for normal binoculars, make sure that the binocular barrels can be adjusted to match the width between the centres of the pupils in each eye of your child.
Choose light weight, compact binoculars that are easy for your children to hold and carry. They need to be able to get their hands comfortably around each barrel of the binoculars and hold them up to their face for a reasonable enough time to enjoy the view. We’d recommend compact or mid sized binocular models with lenses of between 25mm and 30mm in diameter.
In general, binoculars with larger lenses of 42mm or above are bigger and heavier. Binoculars with larger lenses do produce brighter images then those with more compact and smaller 25mm - 30mm objective lenses, but for children who are learning to use binoculars, ease and comfort of use far outweighs the benefits of having slightly brighter images and being able to use them in lower light situations.
We all have our own ideas about what’s expensive and what’s not, but in general, we’d always advise customers who are buying a present for their children to opt for a product that is about mid range in their price bracket. We don’t want you to spend the earth, but often, you get what you pay for with binoculars, and we wouldn't recommend opting for the cheapest pair available as they’re likely to end up being hard and frustrating for your children to use and may, in the end put them off pursuing their new hobby all together.
Below we’ve recommended our top children's binoculars for 2015. These recommendations combine binoculars designed especially for children, and others that are for all ages but are more than suitable for children to use and enjoy.
If you’ve got family and friends who love to travel and are always planning their next overseas trip in search of new and exciting places to see and experience, then a set of binoculars should be on the top of your shopping list for them this birthday or Christmas.
A pair of binoculars make the perfect present for keen travellers and adventurers, as they help them experience every wonderful sight, landscape, city, beach or mountain range in fantastic detail, truely immersing them in their exciting new environment.
Similarly, if you’ve got some keen trampers in your family or group of friends, then they too will love a set of binoculars, and will be able to spend years to come enjoying closer views of the beautiful Australian countryside.
But which binoculars should you choose to ensure that you give the very best binoculars for travel and hiking?
Use our short, easy to understand gift buying guide to ensure that you give the ideal sports optic present this silly season.
Don’t have enough time to read the detail? We’ve highlighted the most important features of travel and hiking binoculars in green and provided you with recommended products at the end of the article.
Choose lightweight, compact binoculars with lenses that are between 20mm and 30mm wide (for example 8x21 binoculars).
At ScopeUout we group our binoculars into three sizes; compact, full size and giant. As their name suggests, compact binoculars are the most lightweight and compact design of binoculars that you can choose, and they’re ideal for travel, sightseeing, hiking, and just about any activity where you’ll need the smallest possible equipment. The size and weight of different compact models can vary, and as its likely that the binoculars your giving are going to be packed in a rucksack or suitcase, and even slipped in a coat pocket for a sightseeing or hiking trip, be sure to keep a close eye on the size and weight listed in the specification of each product.
Choose binoculars with a magnification of between 8x and 10x.
Don’t be tempted to buy binoculars with a really high magnification. The binoculars your giving for travel and hiking are going to be used on the move, without the use of a tripod. High magnification binoculars are hard to stabilise when you're just holding them in your hands and can lead to shaky, blurry images and are no fun to look through. Lower end magnifications up to 10x are the ideal compromise between getting a more magnified, close up view, and actually being able to see an image that is clear and crisp enough to enjoy.
Look for binoculars that have a rubber coating applied to the outside of their body to protect them from bumps and scrapes.
If the binoculars your giving are going to be used for hiking or other extreme activities then we’d recommend choosing some that have a rubber armoured body to give them some extra strength.
If the binoculars are going to be used for hiking, or taken to damp and humid climates then opt for a pair that have been treated to make them waterproof and fogproof.
It’s easy to get caught in a downpour whilst tramping, and the last thing you want is for your awesome gift to be water damaged. Equally, if the internal lens system of a pair of binoculars hasn’t been nitrogen sealed, moisture can gather inside them and fog up their internal lenses. Waterproof binoculars can be slightly more expensive, but who wants to give a gift that can’t be used?
Got a hunting fan in the family? Or perhaps one of your best friends feels most at home stalking deer in the woods? If you want to make then feel extra special this birthday or Christmas why not treat them to some new hunting optics?
Our simple guide for presents for hunters will help you choose the best binoculars for your hunting friends and family. Riflescopes are very personal objects that have to be exactly suited to the rifle that they are mounted on, so despite thinking that a scope would make an awesome present, we’d advise you to leave the scope choosing to the rifle owner, and give them some fantastic binoculars to aid their hunting ventures instead.
Our quick and easy guide to buying hunting optics will help you give the perfect gift this festive period. We’ve highlighted all of the important features that you need to look out for when choosing the best hunting binoculars and recommended a few fantastic present options for you to choose from.
Choose binoculars with a magnification of 8x or 10x.
8x and 10x magnifications are ideal for most hunting applications. They allow hunters to get a close and clear enough view of their target, whilst being easy to stabilise. They also offer a wide field of view, allowing as wide a view of the landscape around as possible and making it easier to spot a target.
Choose full sized binoculars with 42mm lenses, or opt for mid sized, 32mm binoculars if having light equipment is very important.
Most hunting takes place at dawn or dusk in rural locations away from home. Due to this, having equipment that works well in low light but doesn’t weight too much is important. Full sized binoculars offer the ideal compromise between size and low light performance, as their 42mm objective lenses have good light capturing abilities. If the person that you’re buying for is particularly conscious of the weight of their equipment, and often hunts in open landscapes where more light is available than in wooded locations, then mid sized binoculars with lenses around 32mm in diameter may be adequate.
Always choose waterproof and fog proof binoculars that are rugged with a rubber coating.
Hunting can be a hardcore sport where you’re exposed to the elements and surrounded by water and dirt. Make sure that the equipment you buy for your friends and loved one for their hunting expeditions is durable and can withstand all that the environment has to throw at them. Always choose waterproof binoculars that have been nitrogen purged and o-ring sealed to make sure that their optics don’t break if exposed to water, or fog in damp environments. We’d also recommend binoculars that have a rubber coating to protect them against bumps and scrapes.
Opt for binoculars with fully multicoated lenses to help with light transmission.
Most binoculars have lenses that have at least one layer of anti reflective coatings. These coatings help light pass through the lenses in the binocular and ultimately make the images that they produce clear, bright and crisp. The more coatings binocular lenses have, the better they transmit light. Generally, binoculars are classed as having ‘coated’, ‘multi-coated’ or ‘fully multi-coated’ lenses depending on how many layers of coating they have had applied to them. If possible always choose ‘fully multi-coated optics for hunting so that the images produced by them are as bright and clear as possible.
Have you got an awesome view from your home that you want to make the most of and see in more detail? Or perhaps you have a friend or family member who loves to spend hours watching the boats in the harbour from their deck or balcony? Well, Christmas or a birthday is the perfect time to give them a present that they will get hours of enjoyment from and will allow them to see the stunning views that they’re surrounded by in more detail. But what’s the best equipment for getting a closer look and enjoying views of beautiful Australia? Use our helpful guide below to help you decide whether to give binoculars, a spotting scope or telescope for observing views of boats on the ocean, stunning countryside or cityscapes.
Make sure you give a gift that’s fit for purpose, and answer the simple questions below to help you decide between giving your friends or loved one binoculars, a telescope or a spotting scope.
Yes - Choose binoculars for enjoying the view
No, this isn’t important - Opt for a spotting scope or a telescope to get a more magnified, clearer and brighter view. Don’t forget that these optics come with tripods so will take up more room and will need to be a more permanent feature in the window of the home.
Yes - Choose a refractor telescope. This can be used to view the stars and planets at night, but can also be used to enjoy views of the landscape around you in day light hours. Don’t forget that refractor telescopes do produce a mirror image of the actual view; flipping images from left to right, so if you’re after a true-to-life rendition of the view then a spotting scope with a large objective lens will be more appropriate for you. Spotting scopes with larger lenses can be used for basic astronomy too, but will not perform as well as a telescope so have a think about what’s more important - enjoying the view in the day or stargazing at night.
No - Choose either a spotting scope or binoculars depending on how portable and compact you want the equipment to be. Most spotting scopes come with a zoom eyepiece which allows you to get a closer look at an object of interest, simply by zooming in. Telescopes on the other hand come with a range of different eye pieces at set magnifications, and will require you to change the eye piece if you wish to zoom in, and meaning that theirs a chance that you’ll miss the action that you wanted to get a closer view of in the first place.
If theres a chance that the owner of the optics will want them to be multifunctional and we able enjoy views from the home and to take them outdoors for hunting or bird watching too, then opt for a waterproof spotting scope or waterproof binoculars. Again, consider how portable the optics will need to be and consider which option would be best for the user in mind.
If you’ve got a loved one or close friend who simply loves watching birds then our awesome gift guide will help you pick the ideal Christmas or birthday gift to enable them to pursue their favourite hobbies, and make them remember you as the worlds more generous and thoughtful present giver around.
Birds are beautiful and intriguing to watch, and avid birders can easily spend hours on end viewing their favourite feathered friends. By using the correct equipment, bird watchers can get a fantastic up close view of Australia’s birds, and relish in the detailed sighting that they’ve been treated to.
If you’re not much of a bird watcher yourself, but you want to give a gift that your bird loving friends and family will adore and get lots of use out of then a pair of bird watching binoculars, or a fantastic spotting scope will be a real hit. Use our brief guide below to help you choose the correct equipment for bird watching, then browse our recommended products to choose the ideal gift. We’ve kept things simple and highlighted all of the important features to look out for when choosing bird watching optics to ensure that the product that you choose is fit for purpose.

Choose binoculars that have a magnification of 7x, 8x or 10x.
The magnification or power of a pair of binoculars governs how much they zoom in on a subject. The higher the magnification, the more detail that you’ll be able to see, but higher magnifications aren’t always best. Highly magnified images are more susceptible to become blurred by shaking hands, and their field of view; or the amount of the landscape that you can see, is smaller. The magnification a bird watcher chooses to opt for us down to personal preference, but we’d always recommend magnifications 10x or lower.
If you’re choosing between binoculars, opt for the ones with a wider field of view (shown in m or ft in the specifications section of our binocular listings). The larger the field of view, the more of the landscape being observed can be seen at one time.
The field of view of a binocular is basically the width of the scene that is in view when you look through them. Binoculars with a wider field of view are preferable when bird watching, as it makes it easier and quicker to spot small fast moving birds as they fly across the landscape.
If you’re buying binoculars for children, or adults with small faces, then opt for those with the smallest minimum interpupillary distance so that the eye cups will comfortably line up with their eyes.
The distance between the eye cups of a set of binoculars is called the interpupillary distance. In many binoculars, the interpupillary distance can be adjusted by moving the barrels of the binoculars closer together or further apart thanks to a central hinge in the binoculars body. Some but not all binoculars will provide you with the maximum and minimum distance that eye cups can move apart, so that you can assess whether you think that this distance will be suitable for the person that you’re buying them for.
Choose binoculars that are waterproof and nitrogen purged to prevent them from fogging up and becoming water damaged.
Even if you don’t think that the binoculars will be used in torrential downpours, it’s important that they have a waterproof coating and have been properly sealed with O-rings to prevent changes in temperate and damp environments causing their internal lenses to fog and moisture to gather. Properly sealed binoculars also give you the reassurance that dust and dirt can’t get inside the lenses and ruin a beautiful view.
If possible, choose binoculars with fully multicoated lenses to increase light transmission and produce bright and clear images.
If possible always choose ‘fully multi-coated optics for the best and most enjoyable viewing experience.
If the person that you’re buying bird watching binoculars for wears eye glasses, then choosing binoculars with long eye of 15mm or more is important.
The eye relief of a set of binoculars refers to how far away from your eyes you can hold them and still see the full image produced by them. If you’re friend or family member wears glasses, then they’ll need to hold the binoculars further away from their eyes than people who don’t, so keep the need for long eye relief in mind when choosing your present.
Opt for either mid-sized or full-sized binoculars with with objective lenses that are between 30mm and 42mm in width.
The size and weight of a pair of binoculars is closely linked to the size of their lenses. Whether bird watchers choose mid sized or full sized binoculars is often down to personal preference, and how much size and weight they want to carry.
In general, the larger the lenses, the brighter and clearer the images the binoculars produce will be, however they’ll also be larger and heavier. Take some time to consider when and where the binoculars will get used and whether the recipient of your gift will be able to use them in comfort.
If the binoculars will be used in densely wooded areas, or at dawn or dusk, then full sized binoculars with 42mm lenses may be needed to produce a bright enough image. In general, full sized binoculars with 42mm lenses (e.g 8x42 binoculars) have many benefits for bird watching, including producing bright, clear, higher resolution images then those with smaller lenses.
If 42mm lensed binoculars are going to be too heavy, you may wish to opt for a compromise between comfort and clarity and give mid sized, 30mm lensed binoculars.
Spotting scopes also make fantastic gifts for people who are really passionate about birding, and already own a pair of binoculars but feel that they would like a more powerful optic to observe birds and nature in greater detail.
In short, a spotting scope is a powerful telescope design for land viewing. Spotters are becoming increasingly popular amongst birders who feel that their binoculars just don’t offer enough magnification to see birds in fine detail from a long distance. Spotting scopes are particularly helpful when you want to locate and observe a bird or animal from a long distance without disturbing it and scaring it away.
Spotting scopes offer much higher magnifications than binoculars and come with zoom eye pieces that allow you to magnify images at different intensities. A common zoom range for spotting scopes is between 20x - 60x and with this they usually have larger lenses than binoculars too. Used with a tripod, spotting scopes offer very stable images that show targets of interest in great detail and clarity.
If you’re not sure whether a spotting scope would make the ideal gift for your bird loving gift recipients then ask yourself the following questions:
Do they already own binoculars and wish that they could see birds in more detail with a higher magnification?
Have they been trying to spot an illusive bird for a while but feel that they’re too close to where they nest and keep scaring it away?
Do they get fed up of holding binoculars for long periods of time and wish they could have their hands free to bird spotting note taking?
Do they frequently watch birds in a stationary position such as in a hide?
If the answer to the above questions is yes, then you should consider giving them a brand new spotting scope. If you’re opting for a spotter then be sure to look for one that:

]]>Put simply, the magnification that an rifle scope offers can either be fixed, for example a 4x32 scope will only show objects at 4x what your naked eye will, or variable, for example a 3-9x32 scope will allow you to see your target at either 3x that of your naked eye, or 9x magnification.
Scopes with a fixed magnification usually have a low magnification, for example 4x or 3x, and scopes that have a variable magnification usually have a low magnification and a high magnification option. When choosing the best scope for you, it’s important to have a think about what the scope will be used for and how easy to use you want your scope to be.
